Migrate from Mint: Step-by-Step Guide 2026

Mint shut down on January 1, 2024 โ€” leaving 3.6 million users without a budgeting app. This guide gets you set up on a real Mint replacement in 30 minutes or less.

โšก Quick Path

For most users: Pick Monarch Money ($99/yr) โ†’ Sign up โ†’ Connect banks โ†’ Recreate budget categories. 30 minutes total. Skip Credit Karma โ€” it's not a budgeting app.

Step 1: Check If You Have Your Mint Data

Mint allowed CSV exports between October 2023 and March 2024. If you saved this data, you can import historical transactions into your new app.

โœ… I have my Mint CSV exports

Locate them on your computer (typically in Downloads folder, named "Transactions.csv" or "Mint_data_export.zip"). Save these โ€” you'll need them in Step 4.

โŒ I never exported (or can't find the file)

No problem โ€” you'll start fresh. Most apps recognize spending patterns within 30-60 days. Your bank account history will sync from your bank, so you don't lose actual transaction records, just Mint's categorization.

Step 2: Pick Your Replacement App

Three solid options based on your needs:

๐Ÿ‘‘ Monarch Money
$99/year โ€” Best Mint replacement
RECOMMENDED

Built by ex-Mint employees. Closest experience to original Mint. Has Mint CSV import tool.

๐Ÿ“Š Quicken Simplifi
$48/year โ€” Best value

Half the price of Monarch with 90% of features. Backed by Quicken's 40-year history. Also has Mint CSV import.

๐ŸŽฏ YNAB
$109/year โ€” For behavior change

Strict zero-based budgeting methodology. Steeper learning curve. Best if you have debt or overspending issues to fix.

Step 4: Connect Your Bank Accounts

Both Monarch and Simplifi use Plaid (12,000+ supported institutions). Connection process:

  1. 1. Click "Add Account" or "Link Account" in the app
  2. 2. Search for your bank by name
  3. 3. Enter your online banking username + password (handled by Plaid, not stored by the app)
  4. 4. Complete two-factor authentication (text message or authenticator app)
  5. 5. Choose which accounts to share (checking, savings, credit cards, investments)
  6. 6. Repeat for each financial institution (banks, credit cards, brokerage, mortgage)

Time: 5 minutes per institution. Most users have 4-7 institutions to connect (~20-35 minutes total). Initial transaction sync takes 24-48 hours.

Step 5: Import Mint Historical Data (Optional)

Skip this step if you don't have Mint CSV exports.

For Monarch Money:

  1. 1. Go to Settings โ†’ Import / Export โ†’ Import Mint Data
  2. 2. Upload your Mint CSV file
  3. 3. Map Mint categories to Monarch categories (auto-suggested)
  4. 4. Review and confirm import
  5. 5. Wait 5-15 minutes for processing

For Quicken Simplifi:

  1. 1. Go to Settings โ†’ Account & Data โ†’ Import Data
  2. 2. Choose "Import from Mint"
  3. 3. Upload Mint CSV
  4. 4. Review Simplifi's category mapping
  5. 5. Confirm import (5-10 minutes)

Step 6: Recreate Your Budget Categories

This is where most ex-Mint users get stuck. Don't try to perfectly recreate Mint โ€” use this as a chance to simplify.

Recommended Starting Categories:

Fixed Expenses
  • โ€ข Housing (rent/mortgage)
  • โ€ข Utilities
  • โ€ข Insurance
  • โ€ข Loan payments
  • โ€ข Subscriptions
Variable Expenses
  • โ€ข Groceries
  • โ€ข Dining out
  • โ€ข Transportation/gas
  • โ€ข Personal/clothing
